Critical Transformer Fault During Commissioning

The Challenge
During the critical commissioning phase of a large-scale data infrastructure project, the client’s engineering team encountered an unexpected transformer fault. This posed a significant risk to both the project timeline and overall safety. The client reached out to PTS for immediate technical support and diagnostics to determine the fault’s nature and whether the equipment could be safely energized or required repair or replacement.

Our Response
The initial call came in on a Wednesday. Within 24 hours, PTS had mobilised an in-house technical specialist. Although site access and commercial clearances caused a brief delay, PTS remained in constant coordination with all stakeholders to maintain readiness.
By Monday, our Electrica Project Manager personally deployed to site to oversee the diagnostic process. Working collaboratively with the client, the general contractor and our specialist partner, the transformer was safely de-energized to allow a full suite of diagnostic tests to be conducted that same afternoon.

The Outcome
Within three hours of testing, the team successfully identified the fault source. A comprehensive report was delivered to the client within 48 hours, providing clear technical evidence to support discussions with their equipment vendor.
While physical repair work was outside our scope, PTS’s rapid response and expert technical reporting equipped the client with the clarity needed to make informed decisions. Crucially, we confirmed that the transformer did not pose an immediate safety risk but recommended targeted remedial works to ensure long-term reliability.
